Got An Ad In The Paper?
By Gary Bryant
I saw an ad in the local paper. It was offering
a bicycle or sale. One my son would have wanted. It
was ten in the morning. I dialed the given phone number.
"Hello?!" I heard a woman's voice answer.
"Yes, I'm calling about the bicycle you had advertised in the
paper?"
"Bicycle? Oh you must mean my son's bike. I don't
know anything about it. You'll have to talk to him."
"Ok, may I speak to him please?"
"To who? Robby? Oh, he's not here. He won't be home
till after school. Why don't you call back then?"
"Fine." I said.
So later in the day, I called back to speak to Robby.
"Robby's not here. I don't know where he is. He
was supposed to come home after school. He's usually
here by dinner, try back then."
"Fine." I said. Early in the evening, I called Robby once
more.
"Robby just stepped out... to the movies I think. Are you
calling about the bicycle? The phone has been ringing off the hook
all day. Maybe you should try tomorrow."
"Fine." I said. I looked in the paper again. I saw ads for
four other bicycles. I don't have to tell you that I never
called Robby back.
If you've spent money on an ad, don't throw it
away by being totally unacceptable. If you live with others,
let them know what's going on. Jot down some basic information
they might read off when answering the phone. By the way,
it might be a good idea to let people know when you'll be back.
